Towards Green Horizons

Analyzing UAS and their role in ESG

Viewpoint

As global drone ecosystems are maturing, industry and governments across the globe focus on the emerging ESG impact of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS).

The positive impacts of drone ecosystems and solutions through specific case studies and models are manifold. Advanced drone solutions within a broader UAS ecosystem could be a key enabler for responding to global ESG challenges. A minimum of 50 different use cases for innovative aerial systems could contribute to achieve global ESG targets across industries such as:

Transportation

Transportation
Replacing traditional modes in Business-to-Consumer (B2C) logistics with UAS options could save circa 12.2mn t CO2 annually by 2045.

Medicine

Medicine
The introduction of drone networks could help reduce medical delivery times in rural areas by 85% and eliminate stock-outs.

Agriculture

Agriculture
The application of drones in the agriculture sector could boost sustainability and significant savings of natural resources, such as reduction of water used by 96%, pesticides used by 10% or CO2 emissions by 99% compared to traditional machinery and tractors in European agriculture.

“Public acceptance for drone solutions with clear environmental, social or security impact is significantly higher compared to purely commercial offerings.”

Outlining and promoting the concrete impact of AAM and UAS on global ESG goals will significantly help to improve public perception and overcome resistance. It is recommended to invest into “playing fields” to increase adoption of ESG beneficial UAS business models and increase acceptance by users, customers, investors, and other stakeholders.
