Meet Bobbi, an associate in our Strategy& Deals team in London. Having completed an MSci degree in physics, she’s hoping her story will encourage others from a scientific background to consider a career in strategy consulting.
After applying via the Females of the Future programme, Bobbi joined PwC on our graduate programme in the autumn of 2020. She's already completed a wide variety of interesting projects; from a maternity wear buy-side due diligence, to a decarbonisation strategy report, to a FinTech payments deal.
“I really enjoy the variety of client projects – it still surprises me how much of an expert you become in these niche topics, even over the course of a two or three week project! There’s so much to learn and the team’s support and work ethic helps you through the steep learning curve and makes for a great team to be a part of.”
“I value the exposure and interaction with the senior team – within Strategy& Deals we have a fairly flat team structure where everyone’s contributions are valued and welcomed. People have always been genuinely interested to hear my perspectives and findings. I’ve even had the opportunity to get involved with discussions in client meetings.”
There are plenty of opportunities to participate in wider initiatives within the Strategy& Deals team. Bobbi sits on the Women’s Network’s committee as co-lead for recruitment. Her passion for female empowerment and gender diversity has inspired her to launch the Strategy& University Outreach Platform to encourage more women to consider a career in Strategy Consulting.
Bobbi is undoubtedly ambitious within her career and it’s a quality she carries into her personal life. From playing and umpiring hockey to cold-water swimming, she also enjoys a quiet moment to practice yoga and read a book. As things start to reopen, she is looking forward to live comedy evenings, summer music festivals and dinner parties with friends.
“Before starting my career in consulting I was nervous that I would just spend my whole life working, with little work-life balance. I was definitely proved wrong! Whilst we definitely work hard, the team really respects non-negotiables and actively encourages us to keep up with social/sport commitments. There are also plenty of socials across Strategy& and within our sector teams, like end-of-project dinners.”
Beginning her career virtually was certainly daunting, throughout virtual training and beyond Bobbi had to quickly get used to reaching out to people she had never met in person for help and advice. With the PwC offices open for our people to use, she’s enjoyed finally being able to meet her colleagues in person.
“The biggest challenge with virtual training was working out how (and whether) to ask the small, seemingly insignificant questions; in the office you’d just quickly ask the person next to you! I’m definitely making the most of the office being open, to pick up tips and ad hoc help from colleagues around me.”
The variation within Bobbi’s day-to-day role keeps her busy and interested. Her soft and technical skills alongside her scientific background have made her a good consultant. Bobbi supports her project teams with data analysis and research, to help solve complicated scenarios for clients. This is one of the many reasons PwC is keen to encourage students from a scientific or analytical background to consider consulting careers.
Bobbi’s passion to make a difference is evident in her own values and one of the reasons she chose PwC as the place to start her career. She’s driven not only by achieving the best results for clients, for the impact on the markets and surrounding industries, but also improving gender diversity and equality.
“The culture at PwC really stands out. Whilst each team has individual culture characteristics, we’re all linked by being part of PwC and having the same overarching culture – one that is collaborative, communicative and driven to solve the toughest problems. I would encourage people to join us if they like challenges, are looking for early responsibility and are keen to make a difference.”
